The University of Chicago Department of Pathology offers a one- or two-year fellowship in diagnostic medical renal pathology training with opportunities for clinical or basic research during an optional second year of training. The service includes the full range of medical renal diseases (approximately 900 cases annually). These cases represent largely native (90%) as well as transplant (10%) renal biopsies from both adult and pediatric patients. Approximately 85% of cases are consult cases from referring hospitals in the region. The University of Chicago is also a major center for adult kidney transplantation.
The fellow participates in the full evaluation of biopsies, which includes light, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. The fellow also presents pathology findings at departmental and multidisciplinary conferences. Research opportunities are available within the Pathology department and in collaboration with nephrology, rheumatology, and transplant surgery investigators among others. Funding is available to attend either the American Society of Nephrology or USCAP meeting. Major ongoing research programs involve the role of complement in renal diseases and autoantibodies in lupus nephritis.
