We're excited that you are considering The University of Chicago as your potential training site or are just curious about our program!
The University of Chicago Medical Center is constantly growing, reflecting the nature of the city that we are located in. A new state-of-the-art hospital, the Center for Care and Discovery, was completed in 2013. Downtown Hyde Park was established as unique identity in 2015. Our new Level 1 adult trauma center opened its doors in 2018.
The Pathology Environment
Chicago is home to a rich network of pathologists and pathology resources from many different institutions, allowing us to pool those resources together to foster a uniquely rich academic environment that benefits both trainees and attending pathologists within it.
The Chicago Pathology Society (CPS) is actually the second oldest professional society dedicated to pathology in the United States, being formally founded in 1881. It serves as a forum to discuss interesting pathology cases, as an educational avenue to keep up to date with emerging topics and new advancements, and as resource for sharing ideas among different institutions and pathology practices.
The Illinois Registry of Anatomic Pathology (IRAP) serves as an avenue to share interesting cases within the membership of CPS. The academic programs within the CPS membership (UIC, Rush, Loyola, Northwestern, North Shore, and U of C) that have residency programs will rotate from month to month, leading each session. The cases are usually presented by the residents within each program, though occasionally, a fellow or an attending will present a case. This allows our residents and trainees an opportunity to sharpen their presentation skills in a professional, large group environment.
Our Community
The University of Chicago Department of Pathology welcomes and celebrates diversity in all forms. Our services and the educational experiences in our department are enhanced by our diverse community. Religious, ethnic/cultural, racial, and LGBTQI groups are represented at all levels (attending, trainees, staff, administration).
With campus located in the beautiful Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, residents and fellows enjoy a wide variety of dining options, entertainment, and outdoor activities. If you've never been to Hyde Park, we invite you to take a visit! Until then, learn a little bit more in this short feature.
