Education

Residency

Each year the Department of Pathology at the University of Chicago is home to over 30 residents and fellows. We offer postgraduate training in preparation for careers in the practice of general, subspecialty, academic pathology and pathology research. The Department strives to help its trainees develop the knowledge and skills needed to become leaders in their respective fields. The Department offers a four-year program for combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP), as well as three-year programs for Anatomic Pathology (AP only) or Clinical Pathology (CP only). There is also a research track option for training in AP or CP intended for physician-scientists desiring research-intensive careers in academic pathology.

The programs are flexible and can be adapted for individual needs. Currently there are 26 residency positions, which are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). In addition, the department supports two years of post doctoral fellowship following clinical training for anyone who wishes to conduct research in any laboratory within the University of Chicago.

Message from the Residency Program Director

Chief Residents' Welcome

Objectives

  • To offer training in all fields of anatomic and clinical pathology that will lead to eligibility for the qualifying examination for the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic/Clinical Pathology, Anatomic Pathology alone, or Clinical Pathology alone.
  • To offer flexibility in training that will suit the need of the trainees for careers as future leaders in pathology practice, education and research.
  • To provide a extensive curriculum that covers all fields of anatomic and clinical pathology with clear goals and objectives that will help guide the trainees through an intense training process that will focus on making the residents competent in Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Communication Skills, Professionalism, Practice Based Learning, and System Based Practice
  • To provide an educational experience through didactic teaching, apprenticeship experiences, and self study, through a variety of required and elective rotations, conferences, seminars, and journal clubs.
  • To provide prompt and useful written evaluations of the trainees that will serve to help focus the resident on their strengths and weaknesses in the six competencies, and help the residents with decisions concerning career choices.
  • To provide opportunity, encouragement and support for scholarly activity and research throughout the training period at all levels of investigation, both translational and basic.
  • To provide ample opportunities for teaching technologists, ancillary medical personnel, medical students, fellow residents, and clinical colleagues in the discipline of pathology.
  • To provide adequate mentoring and role models for all trainees and for all career options in pathology.
  • To adhere to duty hour standards set forth by the ACGME. To ensure a safe working environment, and instruction in safety for all aspects of the training.
  • The Department will strive to provide a working environment that emphasizes safety, reduction of stress, collegiality and professionalism.
